Our Community Care
Empowering Communities Through Practical Compassion
Blending Tzu Chi’s philosophy of “Great Love” with the South African spirit of Ubuntu, the foundation builds resilient, self-sufficient communities through localized volunteer networks. Operating from community hubs like the Jing Si Hall in Bedfordview, volunteers deliver practical, hands-on compassion across multiple fronts. To combat hunger, the Thembakhosa Community Kitchen and the Durban Lunch Programme utilize community-run “Great Love” vegetable gardens to feed thousands of vulnerable children and orphans daily. This dignified care extends to physical health and safety; volunteers offer stroke rehabilitation at the Tembisa Exercise Room, provide home-based care for bedridden patients, and install safe solar lighting in informal settlements to reduce fire risks. Furthermore, dedicated convoys regularly travel deep into rural areas, delivering essential food and blankets to ensure comprehensive support for the nation’s most marginalized populations.
Exercise Rooms
Tzu Chi South Africa operates community-based Exercise Rooms, notably in areas like Tembisa and Ivory Park, to provide essential rehabilitation for stroke survivors and injured individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. Collaborating with healthcare professionals, the foundation trains local volunteers in safe, effective physical therapy techniques to guide patients through simple, incremental exercise routines. Deeply rooted in the local spirit of Ubuntu, the facility is designed to operate as a supportive family environment rather than a clinical institution. Beyond focusing solely on physical recovery, the program emphasizes emotional resilience and mutual care, encouraging patients to actively uplift and assist one another as they work toward regaining their mobility and independence.
Home
Visits
Tzu Chi South Africa’s home visits provide personalized, hands-on care to the country’s most vulnerable residents. In Durban, volunteers regularly visit the elderly and those living with illness, offering practical support by bathing bedridden patients, cleaning homes, and providing vital emotional companionship. Meanwhile, in Johannesburg, home visits often focus on safety and empowerment, with volunteers installing solar lighting in impoverished households to replace dangerous candles and create safe study environments for children. Across both regions, these dedicated visits ensure those facing severe hardships receive tangible aid and a dignified reminder that they are not forgotten.

Kitchens
Tzu Chi South Africa’s community kitchens provide vital daily nourishment and a safe haven for vulnerable children across the country. In the Johannesburg region, the recently expanded Thembakhosa Community Kitchen in Ivory Park serves hot, nutritious meals to over 130 children facing severe hunger. Here, local volunteers go beyond food provision, actively teaching the children essential hygiene and self-care skills. Meanwhile, the massive Durban Lunch Programme in KwaZulu-Natal relies on fresh produce harvested from local “Great Love” vegetable gardens to feed more than 5,000 orphans every day. Through these localized efforts, Tzu Chi ensures that struggling families receive tangible relief and that the next generation is nurtured with both sustenance and compassion.
