Serving as a beacon of compassion and the central hub for humanitarian action, the Jing Si Hall in Bedfordview is the spiritual home for Tzu Chi volunteers. More than just a functional administrative space, this landmark building is a physical embodiment of the foundation’s core values, anchoring our mission to spread “Great Love” throughout South Africa and the wider continent.
Jing Si Hall
First in the African continent
Inaugurated on June 19, 2022, the Johannesburg Jing Si Hall stands as a historic landmark, holding the distinction of being the first of its kind built on the African continent.
Its opening commemorated the 30th anniversary of the Tzu Chi Foundation’s local presence, marking a strategic shift from temporary outposts to a permanent “spiritual fortress.” This purpose-built complex signifies the foundation’s humanitarian mission into concrete roots to serve South African community.
Facilities
The facility serves as an active administrative base and frequently holds Volunteer Days, where residents gather to pack essential relief supplies for vulnerable communities.
It is also a vibrant educational and cultural hub, providing space for the tutoring program alongside public workshops in traditional tea ceremonies, flower arranging, and vegetarian cooking.
Additionally, the expansive grounds regularly host vibrant Vegetarian Fairs, featuring charity sales and eco-friendly exhibitions that promote sustainable living and unite the community to make a tangible difference.
The Roof (Three Jewels)
The building features three layers of gabled roofs made of copper tiles represent the Three Jewels of Buddhism
—The Buddha, the Dharma (teachings), the Sangha (community)
Four Front Columns
represent the “Four Immeasurables” of the foundation’s spirit:

The shape of the roof resembles the Chinese character for “person” (人), symbolizing the organization’s focus on humanity and community.
